In recent years the Australian mining industry has experienced many significant incidents relating to the incidence of lightning striking their operations, which has led to worker fatality, worker injury, unplanned explosives pre-detonation, and unplanned plant and process shutdown.
The Mining Industry is a high risk industry, as many site workgroup activities are required to work exposed to the elements, often in periods of questionable conditions due to the high thunderdays associated with some geographic regions.
Australian standard AS1768-2003 “Lightning Protection” states a mandatory requirement that the use of specially designed lightning detection systems, need to be used on some aspects of mining operations.
